Template Learning Paths
To access Templates in Simul8, go to File > Open. Five templates are available, each demonstrating different applications of simulation.
These templates are based on a manufacturing Machine Shop example, but the principles can be applied to any industry to gain insight and support data-driven decision making.
The Template Scenarios help new users understand how to apply Simul8 in practice. They can also be adapted to reflect your own system, allowing you to explore similar questions without starting from scratch.
Template Scenarios
You can explore the Templates in any order, as each one focuses on a specific learning objective rather than building on previous scenarios.
Each Template Scenario demonstrates how Simul8 can be used to investigate real-world manufacturing challenges and support data-driven decision making. It also explains its purpose and highlights the key KPIs to monitor.
You can experiment with each scenario to identify potential improvements to the base model. The challenges covered include:
1. Base simulation and constraint discovery
Understand current process performance, how it responds to increased demand, and how to identify bottlenecks.
2. Capital investment
Assess whether adding machinery will meet throughput targets and justify the investment over time, e.g. 12 or 24 months.
3. Scrap and rework impact
Explore how reducing scrap and rework affects throughput and overall cost.
4. Resource flexibility
Determine whether cross-trained or multi-skilled resources can meet demand without increasing headcount.
5. Disruption recovery and downtime
Investigate how downtime or quality failures impact throughput, and how lost output can be recovered using staff overtime, including the associated cost and recovery time.
Saving
Once you have adapted a template to your own scenario, you can save your simulation by selecting File > Save As.
If you attempt to overwrite the original example file, Simul8 will prompt you to choose a different file name or location.
